Massage Therapy Program
Massage Therapy Course
Descriptions
MT-101 Massage
Therapy (hours: 225)
Swedish Massage Basics
Students begin classes by learning the experience of
giving and receiving full body massage. Program curricula includes
the demonstration of techniques based on traditional Swedish
Massage coupled with supervised practice. This course establishes a
foundation for further study and provides a common orientation and
language for all students. There is an emphasis on becoming
increasingly comfortable with touch as well as developing
sensitivity, awareness, intuition and other skills which make up
the art of massage.
Massage Therapy
Lecture topics covered include screening, history taking,
documentation and charting, draping and advanced positioning
techniques. Students learn range of motion, body mechanics, client
consultation, medical terms, muscle and nerve disorders and
specialized massage. Techniques for intermediate massage are
demonstrated along with supervised practice.

MT-108 Massage Student
Clinic Practicum (hours: 50)
This program involves the student, working under the
supervision of the Student Clinic Director, in a professional
environment, at our on-premise clinic. The student will be required
to perform virtually all the duties that are generally required in
a private practice; from scheduling appointments to providing
client therapy sessions to housekeeping duties.
Rules requiring high standards of professional dress, personal
conduct and proper etiquette are rigidly enforced.
This invaluable experience includes performing approximately 50
one-hour massage therapy sessions on actual paying clients, most of
which are supplied by the school, but some of which may, and should
be, "recruited" by the student.
Students are given some flexibility in scheduling their time in
the clinic so as to accommodate their personal schedules; however,
once committed to, it is expected the schedule will be adhered to
regardless of personal conflicts.
MT-107 Medical
Errors (hours: 2*)
In this class you will master factors that may contribute to
Medical Errors and learn the difference between preventable and
un-preventable adverse events. Students will also learn safety
practices and procedures, treatment protocols and contraindications
for various treatments. Completion of this course is mandatory to
become a Licensed Massage Therapist.
* Hours are included in MT-101 Massage Therapy.
MT-102 Anatomy,
Physiology & Pathology (hours: 165)
Anatomy & Physiology
Students explore the anatomy and physiology of the normal
functioning of the systems of the human body. Emphasis, in this
course, is on the musculoskeletal, skeletal and nervous systems.
Lecture content and style are oriented to help the student
appreciate the relationship between the "science" of the body
systems and the "art" of body therapy.
Pathology
In conjunction with the Anatomy and Physiology program, students
study the abnormal functioning of the body. A major objective of
this program is to provide students with an indepth understanding
of principles for the safe and effective practice of bodywork and
guidelines for contraindications.

MT-103 Allied
Modalities (hours: 97)
Myofascial Release
A highly interactive stretching technique, Myofascial Release
requires feedback from the client's body to determine the direction
of the stretch and to facilitate maximum relaxation of the tight or
restricted tissues..
Infant Massage
The most current research will be reviewed along with the various
theories of Infant Massage. You will also learn handson techniques
as well as why massage is indicated for children of all ages. Also
presented will be information on communication skills of newborns
and infants plus instruction in basic calming techniques.
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils for therapeutic effects.
Essential oils have been revered for their fragrance and their
restorative effects on the body, mind and spirit for thousands of
years.
Biotherapy
Biotherapy is an energy-balancing technique that offers simple and
speedy treatments that make it one of the most powerful healing
methods ever developed. Students observe techniques for energy
enhancement in both mind and body.
Oriental Studies
The founding of almost all massage traditions lie in the Far East.
It is through the study of these ancient teachings that we further
learn to refine our own art. Florida Academy of Massage & Skin
Care is proud to offer introductions into several of the more
prominent oriental traditions such as Shiatsu and T.C.M.
(Traditional Chinese Medicine).
Reiki
Reiki means "universal life energy" and works on physical,
spiritual, mental and emotional levels. Reiki basically consists of
the "laying on of hands" on the area of the body that an individual
wishes to have treated.
Shiatsu
Shiatsu is also called Acupressure. It is an Oriental massage,
which consists of pressing the fingers on particular points of the
body to ease aches, pains, tension, fatigue and symptoms of
disease.
Neuromuscular Therapy
In this program, students are introduced to the scientific
technique used to bring about structural homeostasis (balance)
through analyzing the physiological principles governing the
performance of the nervous and muscular systems.
Massage for Injuries
Massage Therapists use their knowledge of anatomy, physiology and
pathology to design effective treatment plans aimed at returning
the client to "normal" functioning following softtissue or skeletal
injuries.
Sports Massage
Our sports massage program gives the student the basic tools of
pre-event and post-event massage. This instruction helps the
student to identify post-event conditions that may need a doctor's
attention, such as hypothermia, heat exhaustion, sprains and
strains of muscles.
Tai Chi
Tai Chi Massage (the exercise to develop the art of redirection) is
a body mechanics course for LMT's. Emphasis is on how the Therapist
can move more efficiently during work and other daily
activities.
Reflexology
Students will explore the ancient art of Reflexology. In
this portion of the instruction, the student gains a basic
knowledge of the reflex zones of the hands and feet along with some
basic therapeutic techniques.
MT-104 Hydrotherapy
(hours: 15)
Students learn the science and use of water both internally and
externally, in any of its three forms - solid, liquid or vapor - in
the treatment of disease, trauma and stress. Lecture and
demonstration is given in the methods heat is transferred, the
technique of local thermal procedures, techniques of sprays and
douches and the rationale of hydrotherapy.
